The U.S. Department of Justice recently transmitted to the U.S. Congress the Fiscal Year 2006 Report on U.S. Government Activities to Combat Trafficking in Persons. This report includes information and data on the number of trafficking victims encountered by U.S. officials in the United States, the immigration benefits and social services the U.S. Government has provided these victims, the criminal prosecution and conviction of traffickers in persons, and numerous other Federal activities to end the combat the scourge of modern-day slavery.
The U.S. Government’s activities are coordinated through the Senior Policy Operating Group, and many Federal agencies have anti-trafficking programs. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is responsible for certifying adult victims of trafficking so they can receive a number of Federal health and social service benefits to assist them to rebuild their lives in the United States. HHS also provides resources and options for trafficking victims who are minors.
